Swimming

This is the newest page of my blog, the swimming section. This is the place where I will post all my meets, pictures and videos ( if I have any), and results. Stay tuned!

For those who don't swim or who aren't familiar with the measuring system or words we use, I've decided to make a small dictionary to make this page easier to understand. If I happen to miss a word, make sure to let me know and I'll add it in. I'll list the word or numbers and then list its meaning also with some different ways to describe it, all separated by a comma.

lap - two lengths, down and back
25 - one length
50 - 1 lap, 2 lengths, down and back
100 - ( I think you guys probably get where this is going) 2 laps, 4 lengths

All these number go on up to the longest race, the 1650. Each length is 25 yards, so by using division you can find out how many lengths it is by dividing the number by 25.

Now on to words. Sometimes if I had a bad race, and I know what I did wrong, I might describe it a little bit to you. Here's some words that are commonly used among swimmers.

flip turn - When you get down to the end of the pool, you have to turn around right? Well when doing freestyle or backstroke you would use a flip turn. It's pretty much just a somersault, and then you just push of the wall with your feet after you've flipped.

open turn - when doing breaststroke or fly, you touch the wall and just turn around. This is a lot simpler than a flip turn. when you do an open turn, you have to touch the wall with both hands at the same time when you first come into the wall, or you will get disqualified. I've had this happen to me plenty of times.

medley relay - a relay of varying amounts of yards, where there are four swimmers and each swims a different stroke. The most common relay is the 200 medley relay.

freestyle relay - same thing as the medley relay except that this is with freestyle.

IM - an individual medley, where you swim all of the strokes yourself. With something like the 100 IM, you would swim one length of each stroke.

split time - this is a time that is taken by the scoring board by the touch pads in the water when you swim a relay. When one of the people in the relay touch the wall for the next one to go, the touch pads automatically save the time when they touched and sends it to a computer so we can know how fast we were individually.

Last weekend I had two swim meets. One was away in Camden, and the other was the Maine All-Stars at Bates College. These are the results from both meets.

Camden - 2/2/13- In this meet I swim two individual events and one relay.

200 yard medley relay - 1st place - I swam the 50 fly in this relay but no split time was recorded - 2:27.80
50 yard  backstroke - 1st place - 35.46
50 yard breaststroke - 1st place - 41.56

All-Stars - 2/3/13 - In this meet I did one individual event and one relay.

200 yard medley relay - 1st place - I swam the 50 fly for this relay and my split time was 33.60 - 2:10.85
50 fly, my favorite event - 5th place - 34.19

It was definitely a fun weekend!
